Michael Hornbaker

Michael D. Hornbaker, 69, of Wichita, KS, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon April 13, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital ICU in Wichita, KS with his brother Charles and their sister Gwen at his bedside. Mike was resuscitated after a witnessed cardiorespiratory arrest on Easter Sunday evening four days earlier, but worsened and never regained consciousness.

Mike was born August 2, 1953 and was a member of the HHS Class of 1971. He attended HCJC for a year, then graduated from Bethany Nazarene College near Oklahoma City in 1976 and earned a second bachelor's degree from Wichita State University a few years later. He had various jobs for several years but became progressively physically disabled for the rest of his life. He was in the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps for many years in the late 1960's and early 1970's along with Charles and sister Gwen. He loved history and spent many years researching and documenting the family history of the maternal (Bergen) side as far back as the 1400's in Europe. He was a loving, kind and gentle man.

His survivors include Charles Hornbaker, MD (Connie) and Gwendolyn McCue (Dennis) and their families. He was preceded in death by his father John W. (Bill) Hornbaker and mother Norma McClure. He loved his family and friends and the Lord Jesus Christ. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior as a young child and had a lifelong abiding faith in Him. He is now in His eternal presence in Heaven.

Cremation has taken place. Private graveside services for family will be held sometime in the near future at Elbing First Missionary Cemetery near Newton, KS.
