John Chastain

I worked at the Winfield Correctional Facility as a Corrections Counselor assisting inmates preparing for release into the community, with release planning for employment and housing. My wife Cheryl and I raised two wonderful daughters, who are now grown and raising families of their own. My hobbies are fishing, hunting and amateur radio. Now that I'm retired my primary job is that of a professional grandpa.♥️

The story that comes to mind is the time Don Matthews and I built a Tesla Coil in Electronics class, which was taught by Mr. Robert Klein. We won first place for 5-A division and overall State for electronics at the Fort Hays University industrial arts competition. The Tesla Coil was impressive in operation in that it developed an extremely high voltage at radio frequencies and would fire a lightening like spark up to a yard from the coil when activated. Mr. Rod Here's was the Physics instructor at the time and requested to borrow the coil to demonstrate to his classes. We forgot to caution him to not get too close to the Tesla Coil in operation. He turned the switch on and the coil fired up just fine and everything was going well until he was literally pointing out how the coil worked and the theory of it's operation when he accidentally got his index finger too close and drew a yard long spark, jolting him back quite aways. Needless to say the demonstration ended quickly! The class got a real life lesson in the dangers of high voltage electric current.🤓⚡
